SOVANA

125 km from Castel Monastero

We are in the Maremma region in one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Sovana, an unmissable stop for an art-filled holiday in Tuscany. Having conquered it in 278 B.C., the Romans gave it the name Suana, from the Etruscan name “Suf” which means “green land”. Sovana’s charm is divided into two eras: Etruscan and medieval. A walk in the necropolises dug into the rock until the 7th century B.C. provides unforgettable emotions.

By walking along the enchanting “strada di mezzo” street which crosses the minute historic centre, on the other hand, you will arrive in the midst of the medieval period: from the Palazzo del Pretorio to the church of Santa Maria, with its magnificent 8th century ciborium. A few more steps and just before leaving the village, in evocative solitude amongst the olive groves, you will discover the 12th century cathedral. The interiors are magnificent.

There are also two masterpieces for those who love gourmet cuisine: aquacotta soup and lamb buglione.
