VOLTERRA

80 km from Castel Monastero

Shining forth on top of a rock spur, isolated like a gem, a stone’s throw from heaven.

It was known as the “City of wind”. Volterra, an ancient centre of Etruscan and medieval art, lies in the hills between the valleys of Cécina and Era. The extraordinary “Museo Etrusco Guarnacci”, founded in 1761, is well worth a visit. “L’ombra della sera” (the shadow of the evening), dating from the second century B.C., is a striking piece.

Next, a walk to the Piazza dei Priori, one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, allows you to admire the Palazzo dei Priori, the oldest medieval residence in Tuscany, built between 1208 and 1254. A magnificent view may be enjoyed from the tower. Two spectacular sights are the Romanesque cathedral and the baptistery.

In order to go back to the classical era, take a look at the Roman theatre of Vallebuona, built by the Caecina family in the first century B.C.
