In the majesty of the past

Castel Monastero is set in the Tuscan countryside, surrounded by stunning landscapes of Chianti vineyards, chestnuts forests and long rows of cypress trees just 23km from Siena and within easy reach of charming Tuscan villages.

The origins of Castel Monastero are found in the history of Medieval Tuscany. Mentioned for the first time, under the name of Sarna, in 1044, from 1050 onwards, the castle was referred to mainly as Monastero, in connection also to the nearby Berardenga Abbey. Besieged without success by the Florentines in 1208 the castle was conquered in 1270 by Guido di Montfort who used it as a an outpost against the city of Siena. Bought later by the noble Sienese Chigi Saracini family, the hamlet turned into a country home.

Today, Castel Monastero is a sophisticated resort and a proud member of The Leading Hotels of the World, offering the best of heartfelt Italian hospitality and lifestyle while time seems to follow a more gentle rhythm.

Contrada’, our fine dining restaurant, and ‘Cantina', offering Tuscan cuisine in the Medieval wine cellar, invite you to discover the deliciousness of local and seasonal flavours while two outdoor swimming pool and the 1500 square meters ‘Spa Monasterii' offer space and time for pure relaxation. All surrounded by the natural beauty of Tuscan wilderness.
